A Mother’s Instinct Changed Everything

This Mother’s Day, we honour the mothers who hold their children through fear, uncertainty, treatment and hope.

For Noah’s mom, trusting her instinct became the beginning of a life-changing journey, one no parent ever expects to face alone.

My Son’s Brave Journey

It is devastating to hear that your child has been diagnosed with a rare genetic blood disorder like Fanconi Anemia. But it is not a journey you should have to face alone.

Our journey began when we noticed something was not right. As a mother, you know when your child is not okay. We trusted our instincts and took the necessary steps to seek help.

We first visited a private doctor, but shortly afterwards, we were urgently admitted to hospital. It was overwhelming and frightening. Noah looked pale and weak, and we knew something serious was wrong.

After spending a week in hospital, we were discharged, only to return the following week to the Paediatric Oncology Ward for further testing.

After two bone marrow biopsies, we received the diagnosis: Noah had Fanconi Anemia.

We were told that Noah would need a stem cell transplant. Even though our hearts were heavy, we knew this would give him the best possible chance.

Noah was diagnosed in August 2024. Following the diagnosis, we went through all the necessary testing. Unfortunately, there were no matches within our family.

Then, through DKMS, a donor match was found a perfect 100% match. From there, we began preparing for one of the most difficult journeys Noah would face.

Noah recently underwent his stem cell transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and continues to receive follow-up care at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

There have been moments where we felt overwhelmed and uncertain. But if there is one thing I have learned, it is this: do not walk this journey alone.

Reach out. Connect with support groups. Speak to other parents. There is comfort in knowing someone understands what you are going through.

Ringing the Bell for Hope and Healing

In April, CHOC had the privilege of joining Frere Hospital for a special bell ringing ceremony celebrating children and teenagers completing their cancer treatment journey.

The occasion was made possible through the generous donation of a bell and beautifully crafted plaque by Andre and Sam Coetzee, parents of Rachael, who recently completed treatment for a sarcoma and is now in remission. The ceremony was attended by the Coetzee family, representatives from Frere Hospital management including Dr Andrew Miller, Head of Clinical Governance, Dr Kim Harper, Head of Paediatrics, and Ms Lizette Jennings, Head of Nursing Services, as well as nursing and medical staff, parents and patients from the C3 Ward.

Moments like these carry deep meaning for families who have walked a difficult journey through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The ringing of the bell marks not only the end of treatment, but also a moment of courage, resilience and hope.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Coetzee family for this meaningful contribution to Frere Hospital. Because of their kindness, children and teenagers, together with their caregivers, now have a special way to celebrate an important milestone in their cancer journey.
